Self watering containers allow you freedom in leaving your plants.
Growing a garden indoors requires that you grow your plants in a container. The problem with containers is that you need to provide the water to the plants because rain is not available. Some plants may need daily watering, which is hard to remember if you have a busy schedule. To solve this, you can make a self-watering container that draws water up from a reservoir into the soil. This means you can forget about the watering as long as the reservoir is full. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Place the plant pots upside down at the bottom of the large plastic container.
2. Place the top of the mesh basket onto the middle of the plastic container lid and trace around the lip of the mesh basket onto the lid. Cut the shape out of the large plastic container lid using a utility knife.
3. Center the mesh container in the bottom of the plastic container.
4. Trace a hole for the PVC pipe using the end of the PVC pipe as a guide. Make the hole as big as the diameter of the PVC pipe. Cut the hole in the corner of the lid using a utility knife.
5. Cut the lid of the large plastic container so that it fits inside the container with the hole over the mesh pot. The other pots will support the weight of the lid.
6. Drill a hole into the bottom of the PVC pipe and insert the PVC pipe, with the drilled hole down, into the lid inside the large plastic container.
7. Drill a 1/4-inch hole on each side of the large plastic container, at the same height on each side and feed a 1/4-inch metal wire through the holes. Cut the wire so that it is slightly larger than the width of the large plastic container and tie the metal wire off on each end using a pair of pliers. This keeps the container from bulging once you fill it with dirt.
8. Fill the container with dirt and add plant seedlings.
9. Pour water into the PVC pipe to fill the reservoir with water.
