Fun Theme Ideas

Liven up a party by incorporating a theme.

Parties don't require a theme. A gathering of friends, some food and an activity is all that is really needed to get the party started. But for a truly memorable occasion that will be enjoyed by guests and talked about by others, a themed party is the answer. A theme directs the mood and style of the party from the decorations, costumes and food choices. Does this Spark an idea?

Pirate

"Ahoy, Matey!" and "Arggh!" will be over-used statements at a pirate theme party. Encourage your guests to get into character with pirate costumes. Create a jolly roger out of black and white paper and hang it on the front door. Pirate patches, bandanas and small treasure chests make appropriate favors. Make treasure map invitations, and burn the edges of the paper for an authentic look.

Tacky Tourist

Rent a van and take your guests on a tour of your home town. Visit all the major tourist attractions your area has to offer. Hire a friend to research the area's history and serve as the "official" tour guide. Ask guests to wear tacky tourist costumes, including a camera around their necks to snap photos of the day's event. Buy an inexpensive souvenir or two for guests. If weather permits, have a picnic or BBQ at a popular local park.

Carnival

Waiting for the carnival to come to town can be difficult for a young child. Create a carnival in your own backyard to celebrate the birthday girl's special day. Tape or thumb tack balloons (a tack through the tied off part) on to a wood board and ask guests to try to pop the balloons with darts. Set up bottles and supply balls for party-goers to knock down the bottles. Buy tickets at the party supply store and provide prizes for the winners.

Rock Star

If the birthday boy is a music lover, he will appreciate a Rock Star party. Arrange for a limousine to pick up the birthday boy and friends at school. Play his favorite music videos on the vehicle's DVD player. Upon arriving at the destination, rent a karaoke machine for guests to belt out their favorite tunes. Give sunglasses as favors.
