A Granular Mosquito Repellent

Granular products reduce the number of mosquitoes.

If you find a mosquito breeding site, you may use granular products to kill the immature mosquitoes before they can develop into adults. This effectively reduces the number of biting mosquitoes in the area. Does this Spark an idea?

Types

Granular mosquito larvicides contain either methoprene or the toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti). Methoprene disrupts the growth of larvae, while Bti attacks their digestive tracts. Application, according to label instructions, does not harm fish, waterfowl, pets or humans.

Identification

Mosquito larvae wriggle in the water, periodically coming up to the surface to breathe. The pupae moves in an end-over-end tumbling motion through the water. Casting a shadow over the water causes the larvae and pupae to dive in, making them less visible.

Application

Crank-operated spreaders that you usually use for seeds and fertilizers can evenly apply granular larvicides. Areas with heavy vegetation and severe pollution may require higher rates of application. One application can generally provide protection for up to one month in a pond.
