Homemade Insect Barrier Spray

Insect barrier will keep pests off of your garden plants.

Insect barrier spray deters and kills insects that come into direct contact with it. According to Roger B. Yepsen, author of "The Encyclopedia of Natural Insect and Disease Control," while insect barrier sprays are available for purchase, you can make equally effective ones from home. A tobacco and sulfur compound affects most insects' neuromuscular system, causing convulsions and death. With just a few simple ingredients, you can make your own tobacco/sulfur compound insect barrier. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Combine one ounce of dried tobacco leaves and one gallon of water in a large pot and bring the water to a rolling boil.

2. Reduce heat and allow the tobacco water to simmer for 10 minutes.

3. Turn off the heat on the stove top and pour the tobacco water through a strainer and into a funnel, filtering it into a large spray bottle.

4. Pour 1/8 cup sulfur powder into the spray bottle and screw the top on tightly.

5. Shake the mixture thoroughly to combine the sulfur powder and the tobacco water, completing the insect barrier spray.

6. Apply the insect barrier twice weekly to kill pests. Shake the mixture before you use it again.
