Different Kinds Of Beds

Your bed should be the most attractive item in your room.

The bed is likely the first thing you notice when you enter someone's room, since it's the largest and main piece of furniture in the space. If you're redecorating your bedroom, it's best to go over a few types of beds to figure out which one is best for you based on the size of the room and your decorative personality. Does this Spark an idea?

Bunk Beds

Bunk beds are ideal for your children's room, since they are compact and allow two children to live comfortably in one space. A bunk bed is actually two twin beds, which are the smallest size of beds, built on top of one another, usually connected by a ladder. Or, you can purchase a bunk bed that features a twin bed at the top, and a futon that can be folded into a bed at the bottom, or used as a sofa.

Day Beds

Day beds are twin beds as well, and many parents use these beds to transition their little girls from cribs to "big girl" beds. The beds are often positioned against the wall in the room instead of in the center of the space, and some day beds include pull-out beds underneath to make for additional sleeping space. Of course, adults use day beds in their decor as well, particularly in a den or home office. The beds look like a combination couch and bed, and can be used as a sofa until you're ready to sleep.

Canopy Bed

A canopy bed is perfect for a room that has a whimsical or romantic feel. The canopy, or decorative drapery over the bed, is often supported by four poles on the corners of the bed. There are also canopy beds that feature a canopy elevated in the center of the bed, so that the fabric of the canopy will drape down over the bed. Canopy beds are available in any size, and you can even create a canopy yourself once you purchase the bed in the wood finish or size that you want.

Sofa Bed

A sofa bed is a great idea if you have visitors often, and want to make sure that everyone sleeps comfortably. The bed is actually a sofa until you take the cushions of the sofa off and unfold the bed underneath. Most sofa beds are positioned in the living room or den, and are available in queen size, which is larger than a full or twin sized bed, but there are larger queen and king size varieties available as well.

Water Beds

Water beds are usually sold in queen, king and California king sizes (the largest type of bed available). The mattress is filled with water, and makes for a very comfortable sleep, since the mattress "hugs" the sleeper's body. Water beds are also very sanitary, since dead skin cells and dust can't be collected on the mattress --- simply washing the sheets will get rid of toxic particles, which makes the water bed ideal for those who suffer from allergies.

Murphy Beds

The Murphy bed was invented by William Murphy, and is ideal for individuals with limited space in their homes. The bed actually folds into the wall, so it can be folded up when it's not in use to make more floor space. Murphy beds are usually twin or full-sized, and are often used in studio apartments.
