In addition to being pleasing to the eye and fragrant, flowers can serve several other purposes. One of these is to repel undesirable bugs. Bug-repelling flowers can be especially valuable in a garden, where fruits, vegetables and herbs are vulnerable to hungry insects. Geraniums


Geraniums are flowering plants that feature blooms in an assortment of colors, ranging from white to fuchsia, and a fragrance many find pleasing. Geraniums are repel cabbage worms, which often attack vegetables. They also work well on a porch or patio because they repel Japanese beetles.


Lavender


Lavender is a fragrant herb that features flowers ranging in color from pale lavender to deep indigo. Lavender is great for planting around the perimeter of a house because it repels leaves and moths. It protects other plants by keeping away whiteflies.


Marigolds


Marigolds sport bright, globular blooms in shades of yellow, orange and red. The strongly scented varieties of marigolds are pleasant to some people and bothersome to others. But they repel a variety of unwanted bugs, including whiteflies. Many gardeners plant marigolds around the perimeters of their plots because they keep so many bugs away.


Nasturtiums


Nasturtiums are yellow, orange and red trumpet-shaped flowers with attractive round leaves. In addition to being both attractive and edible, they repel aphids, whiteflies, cucumber beetles and squash bugs.


Sage


Sage is a savory flowering herb that sprouts purple blooms. It repels cabbage moths, beetles, black flea beetles and carrot flies. Because it repels these insects, it is ideal for use as a companion plant to cabbage, carrots and broccoli in the garden.


Catnip


Catnip, like sage, is a flowering herb that sprouts tall purple blooms. It repels squash bugs, ants, weevils, flea beetles, Japanese beetles and aphids. Because of its ability to repel ants, gardeners often plant it around the perimeter of houses.
