Do Fans Keep Mosquitoes Away From Pools

Fans make it hard for mosquitoes to land on your skin.

Mosquitoes bite humans for blood so their eggs can develop. This behavior makes them a nuisance and a source of diseases. If mosquitoes are present in the area around your pool, they may make it less enjoyable for you to spend time outdoor. You may be able to use fans to keep these nuisance insects away. Does this Spark an idea?

Disrupt Flying

Mosquitoes fly best in still air and don't have enough power to effectively maneuver themselves in circulating air. Fans create air movements so mosquitoes can't easily reach the humans they want to bite. As a result, mosquitoes may seek sources of blood meals elsewhere. If you place fans near the pools, you will be able to enjoy the outdoors without having to worry about mosquitoes.

Disrupt Detection

Mosquitoes detect sources of blood meals using various signals, one of which is carbon dioxide. As humans release carbon dioxide when they breathe, we inadvertently invite mosquitoes to bite. Disrupting the detection of carbon dioxide by mosquitoes confuses their senses and prevents them from finding humans. By circulating the air, fans scatter carbon dioxide gases so mosquitoes can't easily find the humans they want to bite.

Fan Strength

You don't need special fans to keep mosquitoes away from pools. Any fan that produces wind speed over 1 mph will help keep mosquitoes away, according to MSN Real Estate. On windy days when you naturally have 1 mph winds, you may not have to turn on the fans to get rid of mosquitoes. The Pennsylvania State University recommends using electric fans in outdoor areas, while the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign recommends using large exhaust fans.

Benefits

Fans repel mosquitoes without using insecticides, minimizing your exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. Unlike insecticides, these fans will also not harm non-target organisms, including insects that may be beneficial. Fans also help you stay cool on warm days, when mosquitoes usually come out to seek blood meals. Additionally, these fans keep away other biting insects that can't fly well in the wind, for example biting midges.
