Combat Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes carry illnesses such as Lyme disease.

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in areas of low-lying water and become especially pesky after rainfall and in humid weather. Because mosquitoes carry disease, it's important to take steps to ensure you reduce the population of mosquitoes in your area or discourage them from laying eggs in your yard. Preventative measures help combat mosquitoes. Coupled with mosquito repelling methods, these steps allow you to enjoy your yard and patio without having to fight off mosquitoes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove standing water that's collected in containers or other stored items outdoors. Rinse out bird baths and decorative fountains every few days to prevent mosquito eggs from being hatched there.

2. Control mosquitoes in small ponds or pools of water in your yard or garden by using mosquito pellets. These can be purchased at a plant nursery and help prevent mosquito infestations.

3. Cooking oil prevents mosquitoes from laying eggs in the water.

Prevent mosquitoes from laying or hatching eggs in low-lying water areas that cannot be drained by adding vegetable oil to the water. Pour in just enough vegetable oil so you can see the droplets of oil on the surface of the water.

4. Garlic is a natural mosquito repellent.

Spray garlic-based mosquito repellent in areas where mosquitoes are present. The natural repellent keeps adult mosquitoes away and kills larvae for four weeks. Apply the repellent to your outdoor living space, such as a patio or garden area.

5. Light citronella candles while you're outside and keep them burning until you go in to repel mosquitoes with the smell.

6. Make a natural mosquito repellent spray by mixing 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil with 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray the eucalyptus oil solution on your skin and clothing before spending time outdoors. Reapply the repellent as needed to keep mosquitoes away.
