Repair A Honeywell Bug Zapper

Bug zapping machines use florescent lighting to attract insects, then kill the insects through quick electrical discharges. Bug zappers can help prevent excessive pest problems when you are hosting outdoor gatherings, and are valued for their ability to get rid of mosquitoes and deer flies. After extended use, bug zappers can begin to malfunction. Many times owners simply discard their malfunctioning bug zapper without first attempting to repair the root problem. Usually the device simply needs to be cleaned and inspected before it can return to perfect functioning. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Unplug your Honeywell bug zapper from electricity before attempting to work with it. Examine the electrical cord for any cracking or fraying. Due to the nature of bug zappers, some units will completely shut down if the electrical cord is damaged. Apply electrical tape to any visibly damaged sections of the cord.

2. Use your screwdriver to open up the latch on the top of the device. If your bug zapper powers on but does not attract any insects, or if the lights do not appear to light up, you may need to replace the bulbs. Bug zappers use special bulbs that can be ordered directly from the manufacturer as well as from some hardware stores. The bulbs can be removed and installed by hand without the need for any special tools.

3. Empty the bug zapper of any dead insect debris. This is one of the most common causes of malfunction in bug zappers. Dead insects can block conductive surfaces, dirty electrical contacts and cause short circuits. Use a can of compressed air and a coarse brush to perform a thorough clean.

4. Check the electrical discharge grids near the bottom of the device for problems. These grids produce the electrical shock that kills insects. Sometimes these grids can crack or be knocked out of place. If you notice two grids are in contact, this may be the cause of a short circuit. Try to bend the grids back into position so that they do not intersect with each other. A cracked grid is a serious problem that requires special training to repair. If you notice a cracked grid, you may need to send your bug zapper in for repair or replacement.
