Why Do Mosquitoes Hate Citronella

Citronella candles look nice and keep pests away

Citronella is a substance commonly used to repel pests, mainly mosquitoes. It comes in many forms that people can use. It is a natural oil that mosquitoes very much dislike. Does this Spark an idea?

What Citronella Is

Citronella is an oil that comes from a dried grassy plant called Cymbopagon Nardus. Its strong odor makes it difficult for mosquitoes and other bugs to locate a host. It acts as a smoke screen by disguising the human scent. Mosquitoes hate this because this prevents them from finding a host to feed on. It's not because they dislike the smell. The length of time it repels mosquitoes depends on how strong the citronella odor is.

Mosquitoes and Citronella

Citronella oil also irritates mosquitoes' feet. This prevents them from landing on a person that is near burning citronella oil, or has applied it to their skin.

Why Only Mosquitoes

Since mosquitoes are pretty much the only bugs that feed off of human blood, this natural repellent pertains mostly to them. They can't survive and lay eggs if they can't find a victim to suck blood from.
