Make Your Own Miniature Pond

A miniature pond is perfect for small areas and can be as small as necessary to fit any location in your landscape. A small pump is required to break the surface tension to keep mosquitoes from breeding in the water. A filtration system is not required because a miniature pond is easy to drain and refill as needed to keep the water clean. A miniature pond can be constructed in just a few hours to create a quick focal point for your yard. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the height of the water feature pump with a tape measure.

2. Dig out the area for the pond at least 3 inches deeper than the chosen water feature pump is tall. Remove sod, rocks and roots.

3. Pour an inch or two of sand on the pond area to cushion the liner.

4. Position the liner centered over the pond area. Slowly fill with water from a hose. Pull the liner as it is filling to position it as flat as possible.

5. Place the water feature pump in the pond. Plug the electrical cord into a GFI-rated outlet.

6. Run the miniature hose from the pump so it is at least slightly above the water line. A miniature waterfall would be a perfect and functional accent to the miniature pond. It is very important to break the surface tension of the water to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs in the water.

7. Keep the length of the hose from the pump so it can be used to direct water away from the pond as needed for cleaning.

8. Dig a shallow trench, about 2 inches deep, around the perimeter of the pond and trim the liner to fit over the pond sides and into the trench.

9. Fill the trench with gravel to hold the liner in place. Place flat edging stones on top of the trench and liner.
