Civil War reenactments are living history lessons that put us in touch with our past. Follow these steps to become a participant in these fun, educational events.
Instructions
1. Go to Civil War Reenactments as often as possible. You can usually find these events on a state's official website or in your local newspaper if you live near actual Civil War battlefields. See what the reenactors do throughout the event and what is required of them. Weekend events usually require them to stay overnight, in their camp tents, just like Civil War soldiers.
2. Decide which side you want to "fight" for--the North or the South. You can choose by political preference, uniform color, or by whatever regiments are closest to you. You can also choose to be a civilian reenactor. Many units will need you to play both sides at different events, so don't be too attached to one over the other.
3. Find a unit you would like to join. You may live in an area that has a regiment and can get started right away. If not, you may have to travel. Look at the Civil War Reenactment Units website (see below) to find a list of units and where they are located.
4. Apply to and join a reenactment unit, after you browse through all your choices. Minors need parents' permission to start reenacting. To be considered a member of most units you will have to pay dues. Also, attending the unit meetings will help you get up to speed on needed gear and upcoming events.
5. Purchase authentic equipment before you start reenacting at your first event. Your unit will provide you with the requirements and resources for these items. Sometimes you can find good deals at online auctions, as well as online stores that specialize in Civil War Reenactment supplies, but make sure you research what you need, or rely on your unit to give you the specifics. You can't show up in "farb" gear (not authentic to the time) and expect to participate.
6. Attend your unit's School of the Soldier, where you will learn proper battle technique and movements. You will also need to research about camp life for the soldiers during the Civil War before you start reenacting. Books like "Camp and Outpost Duty for Infantry" will help, as well as any other material your unit provides.
7. Brush up on your history. Read about specific battles that occurred during the Civil War, especially battles that your regiment may reenact.
