Does Listerine Really Work As A Mosquito Repellent

Mosquitoes lurk at night.

Mosquitoes are one of the major drawbacks to camping and other nighttime summer activities. No one enjoys going in the yard or into the woods and returning covered with red bites. Mosquito repellent can be quite expensive as well. Instead, some people prefer to use Listerine to ward off mosquitoes. Does this Spark an idea?

Identification

According to PestInformation.com, mosquitoes do not like the strong smell of the antibacterial mouthwash Listerine, which contains known mosquito repellents thymol (a derivative of thyme) and eucalyptol. By rubbing it on your skin or spraying some in the area around you, some people claim it will repel mosquitoes.

Benefits

Listerine is much more affordable than products made with the pesticide DEET, making it a good option if you are on a budget because you can buy a large bottle at a very low price. You also only need to apply a small amount for it to be effective, according to HealthGuidance.org.

Considerations

Listerine is not especially potent when fighting mosquitoes, according to Snopes.com. While it may have a limited effect when repelling mosquitoes, you are better off using something more powerful with DEET if you want assured protection.
