Home waterfalls generally are not the favorite environment of mosquitoes because the water is usually filtered and moving. Mosquitoes prefer to lay eggs in standing water; however, if the pressure of the water is just a trickle, or if you turn off the waterfall element for a time to conserve energy -- when you go on vacation, for example -- mosquitoes may choose a home waterfall as a suitable habitat. Because mosquito bites can cause serious illnesses, it's important to keep their numbers under control. This means preventing mosquito larvae from flourishing in areas such as home waterfalls. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Keep your waterfall in good maintenance so the water is kept flowing and does not stagnate. This may mean changing pump filters or replacing worn-out pumps as necessary.
2. Treat the water with a mosquito dunk or granules containing a larvicide. Commonly sold larvicides contain Bti or methoprene, which are safe to use around pets and other wildlife.
3. Add fresh larvicide to the water each month all through mosquito season.
