Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) is a sturdy grass that grows in clumps of flat, grayish-green leaves. Citronella oil is often used in perfumes and as an insect repellent. Citronella is also known as West Indian lemongrass. Does this Spark an idea?
Propagation
Dig the entire clump of citronella and lift the plant carefully from the ground. Pull the roots apart carefully with your hands, then re-plant the divided clumps. Each divided clump should have a healthy root system.
Care
Plant citronella in sandy, well-drained soil and full sunlight. Keep the soil continuously damp, as citronella is a tropical plant that does best with a minimum of 30 inches of water per year.
Hardiness
Citronella is a perennial in USDA hardiness zones 10 to 12. The plant requires a long period of warm weather and won't tolerate cold temperatures or extended periods of damp weather. In cool climates, the plant can be divided in autumn. Overwinter the plant indoors, then plant it outdoors in spring.
