Smother A Tick

Common tick

Few things are more disturbing than finding a engorged tick on your body a day or more after an outdoor outing and realizing it has been feeding on you. Luckily, ticks are not usually harmful though they can carry diseases. There are a number of methods for getting rid of ticks, but one way is to smother them.

Instructions

1. Search your body for ticks thoroughly after every outdoor outing, especially when in a wooded area.

2. When you find a tick that is already implanted (head is stuck in your body), use one of these household items to smother it: rubbing alcohol, gasoline, nail polish, petroleum jelly or liquid soap.

3. Apply the chosen substance with a cotton ball on the area so it completely envelops the tick. If you can't completely cover the tick, place the cotton ball on top.

4. Keep still and leave the area alone for 5 to 10 minutes. The tick should detach as it is suffocating and will try to get away.

5. Lift up the cotton ball and the tick should come up with it. If possible, save the tick for identification and testing in case you develop symptoms of a common tick-born illness like Lyme's Disease.
