Diy Fly Trap

Flies can ruin any good picnic, outing or gathering taking place outside during warm weather. Screen tents can help but can be costly, and citronella candles don't necessarily get rid of flies. Using household items, you can make a fly trap easily and, depending on what effect you want, you can cater the trap to your needs. Does this Spark an idea?

Items You'll Need

You will need a 2-liter soda bottle. Clear bottles work best. Make sure to remove the label. You will also need thin, bendable wire. Then, to choose how you will catch your flies, experiment. Some things that work best are store bought insecticides (with fly and pest attractant), rotting food like fruits, meats and warm juices.

Meat, Fruit and Juices

If you choose to use biomass, put it into the bottle and lay the bottle on its side. Make sure the bottle is not too full or the biomass will spill out and make a stinky, sticky mess. Take the wire, wrap it around the middle of the bottle twice and then use wire cutters to grasp, twist and cut the wire to the desired length and safety. You don't want any wire sticking out that could poke or scratch anyone. Hang the end of the wire not wrapped around the bottle to a deck or porch area. The flies will fly inside and get stuck in the biomass.

Insecticide

This is a less organic way to make your own fly trap, but simply take a liquid insecticide and pour in a little bit at a time, making sure to coat the walls of the bottle evenly. Spin the bottle around if necessary to make sure to coat all portions. Let the liquid dry. Then take the wire, wrap it tightly around the bottom of the bottle (far away from the neck) and hang the bottle upside-down in the fly-infested area. The flies will be attracted to the scent, fly up in to the bottle, won't be able to fly back down and will land on the walls with insecticide on them.
