A preservative is recommended anytime water is introduced into a product in order to slow the growth of bacteria and mold.
Time Frame
Homemade lotion that has a preservative and is in a sterilized container should have the same shelf life of approximately 6 months. It will also depend on which oils are used, because some oils may develop a rancid smell more quickly than others. If the lotion does not have a preservative, it should be refrigerated and should be kept no longer than a week. Watch carefully for mold growth.
