Dawn Detergent As Insect Repellent

If a line of ants comes marching across your kitchen floor, a way to remove them is very possibly sitting by your sink. Dawn detergent and water will kill insects and keep them away from your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Function

Dawn detergent gets rid of insects because of the surfactants it contains. These compounds allow the detergent to penetrate an insect's body, killing it. Dawn and other dish soaps kill insects rather than truly repel them.

Application

To get rid of insects using Dawn detergent, add a teaspoon of Dawn to a spray bottle filled with water. Mix well, then spray down problem areas. Dish soap works best against insects indoors on kitchen floors or outdoors when sprayed around the foundation of your home.

Considerations

Dawn detergent can injure plants if sprayed directly on them. It can penetrate the waxy protection on their leaves and damage the underlying tissue. Dawn detergent also gets rid of beneficial insects it touches, so apply it carefully to avoid driving away insects like bees you might want in your garden.
