Mosquito Repellent Appliances

Many mosquito repellants also work on other flying insects like flies and gnats.

Mosquitoes and flying insects are a constant problem for anyone that spends a lot of time outdoors. Mosquito repelling appliances are designed to alleviate the nuisance of flying insects by driving them out of the immediate area. Different products achieve this end by different means however most appliances rely on either high pitched sound waves or a chemical repellent to drive out insects. Does this Spark an idea?

Dispersed Chemical Repellent

Mosquito repellent appliances typically are designed to drive mosquitoes and other flying insects out of a specific area. These appliances use chemicals such as Alethrin, which is derived from chrysanthemums, to repel insects. Mosquito-repelling chemical is released into the air through use of a butane heater to slowly vaporize repellent cartridges. Once the chemical is vaporized, it disperses into the surrounding area, where its noxious properties drive away a variety of annoying flying insects. In addition to mosquitoes, chemicals like Alethrin are effective at repelling mosquitoes, gnats, no-seeums, black flies and sand flies.

Combination Devices

Mosquito repellent appliances are also available as dual-purpose appliances. The most common type is a portable battery-operated lantern that also repels mosquitoes. The lantern portion of the appliance typically operates on standard flashlight batteries. The mosquito repellent lantern sold by ThermaCELL is an example of this sort of device. It uses butane cartridges to repel mosquitoes from a 15 x 15 foot area with Alethrin. It is suitable for protecting a specific area, but requires 10 to 15 minutes to saturate the area around the lantern with repellent.

Personal Repellent

Personal mosquito repellent appliances are a portable method for repelling mosquitoes. This type of appliance uses a fan to quickly spread a chemical repellent into the air around the person wearing it. Unlike other types of chemical repellent, this type of appliance does not restrict a person to a certain area; but it is most effective when it stays relatively stationary.

Ultra Sonic Devices

Ultra sonic pest control devices utilize high-frequency sound waves to drive pests out of an area. The benefit of these devices is that they do not require the use of chemicals, and are designed to cover large areas. Ultra sonic pest control appliances are also available in multi-function units that are designed to repel a variety of pests, ranging from mosquitoes to rodents. The disadvantage of these devices is that they are less efficient than most chemically based repellent appliances.
