Identify Conure Breeds

Conures are among the most engaging of pets. Known for their friendliness and almost human sense of humor, they readily interact with their owners. Follow these steps to recognize the various breeds.

Instructions

1. Check out the sunny dispositions. The Sun Conure is probably the most common, and one of the most colorful of the conure breeds. The Sun Conure possesses a veritable rainbow of striking orange/yellow/red over most of its twelve-inch frame and loves to play and interact with people. They are also among the loudest of the Conure breeds and require lots of attention.

2. Investigate the capper caper! The Gold Cap Conure is among the larger of the Conure breeds at thirteen inches and has red coloring on the underside of its wings to complement its green coloring. Not as loud as the Sun Conure, this breed though can raise the decibel level if ignored. This breed also has better speaking ability than other Conures and can learn a few words.

3. Pick a playful partner. The Jenday Conure is another breed of conure that is very playful and easily trained. The Jenday averages about 12 inches in length and is known by its yellow head, green wings and orange breast. The Jenday is also characterized by a feather free white ring around its eyes. These playful feathered kids make fun and engaging partners who are easily trained and very affectionate.

4. Look who's talkin' it up. If you are looking for a talkative conure breed, look no further than the Blue Crown Conure. Measuring up to 15 inches, it is also among the larger of the captive Conure breeds. It gets its name from its off-blue color on the top of its head. It too has a white ring eyelet. Among the most intelligent, Blue Crowns can develop extensive vocabularies and love to snuggle up to their owners after a playful outing. Another great talker is the Red Fronted Conure.

5. Check out the cheeky chaps. The Green Cheeked Conure is popular for its inquisitiveness and for its ease in training. At only 10 inches, it is among the smallest of the Conure breeds but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in personality. The Green Cheek has a black head to go along with it green cheeks, green wings, gray/black striped breast and a red mark on their bellies. It is easily trained and not nearly as loud as many of its Conure cousins. The Green Cheek is sometimes confused with the Maroon Bellied Conure as it is similar in size but has a green head. Like the Green Cheeked, Maroon-Bellied is playful and easily trained.
