Build A Drainage Ditch In A Yard

Reroute water to reduce soggy lawn issues.

Not all yards are perfect, but some issues can be improved upon. If you have low places in your yard that tend to trap water, you can do some yard renovations to reroute the flow of water. Digging a drainage ditch will give the rainwater a path through the yard to other areas where it could be used or send it completely out into a street drain. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Find the problem area in your lawn. This is generally a low spot where water pools and cannot flow away.

2. Decide where you want the water to flow to. Direct it toward another drainage area, to landscaping that could benefit from the additional water or out of the yard.

3. Dig a trench along the chosen path deep enough to bury the drainage piping. Check to make sure the ditch is constantly going downward. The ditch should drop about half a foot for every 100 feet of length.

4. Lay the perforated drain pipe in the ditch. This pipe is bendable, so the ditch doesn't have to be a straight line. Attach a strainer to the end of the pipe located in the area you are draining. This will keep debris out of the pipe.

5. Cover with small round stones and then fill in the ditch with dirt. Do not cover the other end of the pipe with dirt, although you can hide it with nice looking stones that will still allow water to flow out.
