Repel A Dog

Repel a Dog

As wonderful as dogs are, dog attacks kill and injure many people each year. As an animal lover, and dog owner, this topic is difficult for me to write about. However, hopefully these tips will educate readers on a few different ways to repel a dog.

Instructions

1. Run- Be aware of your surroundings. If you are near any type of area where you know you will be safe, and the dog will not be able to enter, go their immediately.

2. Make Noise- In many cases this startles the dog, and it will retreat. Making noise also alarms others of the situation, so they can come to your aid, contact proper authorities, and seek help or medical attention.

3. Use objects- If there are any objects (sticks, rocks) in your immediate area, use them to your advantage as a defense. For example, a large branch or stick may assist you in providing some distance between yourself and the dog.

4. Cover senses- Dogs are much like humans, and do not like having their sensory systems covered, blocked or harmed in any way. If a dog clamps down on your arm, go for the dog's areas such as eyes, nose, ears to deter them from continuing the attack Also, kicking at a dogs legs might also act as a deterrent, as it may lose its balance and discontinue its attack. If at all possible, secure the dogs head to prevent it from shaking from side.

5. Use Repellants-If they are available to you at the time, use repellants that are approved for use on dogs. There are various types sold on the market. These include: Get-Away and BioDefend. There are also dog whistles that when used properly, also act as a deterrent.
