Flying Insect Killer For The Yard

Flies can pose a problem, especially during the warmer months.

Flying insects can be an extreme annoyance in your gardens or lawns, particularly during the warmer months when they're constantly propagating. These pests, such as mosquitoes, gnats or Japanese beetles, can bite and infest your garden, making it a difficult place to enjoy with friends or family. Numerous options are available for eradicating these flying pests, all of them with unique advantages and disadvantages. Does this Spark an idea?

Bug Bombs

Bug bombs are like smoke grenades that release clouds of pesticide that will kill flying insects and sometimes even their eggs. While these can generally do a good job of eliminating flying pests in your yard, they are not be discriminatory and will also kill beneficial insects such as praying mantises or even bees that help pollinate your flowers. They may also be harmful to other wildlife living in your garden such as squirrels or rabbits.

Bug Zappers

Bug zappers use an ultraviolet light surrounded by an electrified wire grating to draw in flying insects and then shock them to death as soon as they touch the wiring, often exploding in a little puff of smoke accompanied by a distinct zapping sound. Zappers can only be used at night and are better suited as distractions to draw flying insects away from you or your friends and not so much killing the insects in mass.

Sticky Tapes

Sticky tapes are rolls of highly adhesive tape that are hung from trees or other plants and emit a scent alluring to flying insects. When the insects touch down on the tape's surface, they won't be able to get back off and will eventually die. Sticky tapes can be effective at wiping out lots of flying insects at a time, especially if they're put in areas with a high concentration. However, no one wants to see thousands of little corpses hanging in their gardens or lawns, which makes them unattractive.

Beetle Traps

Japanese beetles are fairly large and can invade gardens and lawns. Specialized traps are sold in hardware stores that are effective at alleviating the issue. These traps involve a bag hanging from a tree branch with a piece of bait at the bottom and a single entrance at the top. Once the beetle enters the bag from the top, it will have a difficult if not impossible time retracing its steps and getting out. These bags can become filled with beetles over the course of a few days and must be disposed of regularly.
