Ideas For Small Bedrooms For Infants

Nurseries needn't be spacious.

The littlest one in the family naturally gets the smallest room in the house. Just because it's a tight fit doesn't mean it can't be a nice nursery. Use a combination of smart furniture selection and creative decoration to make your infant's room feel as spacious and welcoming as possible. Does this Spark an idea?

Crib

Use a small crib with clean lines to save room in a crowded nursery. For the first several months, you can keep the baby in a bassinet instead of a crib to take up less room. Alternately, purchase a convertible, modular crib that allows additional sections as your child grows. If you prefer, purchase a multifunctional crib with storage shelves underneath or a built-in changing table.

Other Furniture

Use as little furniture as possible in the room, and use portable or collapsible products that you can fold when not in use. Keep a foldaway changing table against the wall or in a nearby closet. Use a narrow, tall shelf to store baby supplies. Buy in a single "grown-up" piece of furniture, such as a rocking chair or a love seat. Store folding chairs in closet in or near the nursery if you want to entertain guests in the baby bedroom.

Mirrors

Use low-profile mirrors to add light and spaciousness to the room. Install small mirrors opposite windows and slightly above eye level to reflect the sky, opening up that side of the room. Scatter decorative mirrors with interesting shapes, such as butterflies, flowers, circles or stars, along the walls as light, airy decorations. Alternately, cover a wall with a mirror and keep furniture toward the other side of the room. The mirror will reflect the room, making it appear twice as large.

Decorating

Decorate the room in ways that don't use up extra space. Paint a sky mural on the ceiling or a fantasy castle directly on the wall. Put in wall shelves and put small toy animals on the edges between baby supplies. Put blankets with strong, geometric patterns in bold colors on the crib. Decorate the dresser or door knobs with animals or childlike designs made out of polymer clay. Unscrew the knob, wrap a brightly colored piece of clay around it and shape it into a starfish or animal shape. Bake the knob according to directions and put it back on the door or dresser.
