Keep Mosquitoes Off My Lawn

Keep mosquitoes away from your yard to enjoy a bite-free summer.

Mosquitoes are prevalent insects that not only bite and cause itchy irritations, but can also spread diseases like West Nile Virus. Since these pests are so common, having fun outdoors during summer months can be difficult. Several methods can keep mosquitoes off your lawn and away from your home. Although it is still important to wear some sort of mosquito repellent, keeping them away from the surrounding area will help reduce the risk of getting bitten. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Drain all standing water every five days. Standing water is a common spot to find mosquito larvae. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, and new hatchlings are born every 14 days. Draining the water frequently will prevent new mosquitoes from hatching.

2. Treat water features like bird baths, fountains and ponds with safe, chemical-free mosquito repellents to prevent mosquitoes from laying their eggs in those locations. Buy these preparations in home and garden stores; follow the instructions and treat the water features as necessary.

3. Install mosquito catchers on your lawn. These devices release carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes, and then traps the mosquitoes once they get too close. These devices work with varying success, but should be useful if you live in an area that has a heavy concentration of mosquitoes.

4. Dry out any moist areas of soil. Mosquitoes are attracted to damp areas under decks and porches. Inspect these areas regularly and if necessary, clean them out to dry them.

5. Install a bug zapper. These devices work by attracting mosquitoes to the light and then zapping them with electricity when they get too close. These devices work well for decks and patios where people gather.
