Homemade Rabbit Control In Gardens

A small rabbit population can destroy a garden.

Rabbits are a common garden pest across the U.S. They will eat most vegetable plants and, in the winter, are known to chew on ornamental shrubs or any woody plant growth. Take steps at home to keep rabbits out of your garden. The most effective methods include installing a mesh barrier and spraying the plants with a homemade repellent. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Put three jalapeno peppers in a food processor, and turn on the machine. Pour in water until you form a thin paste.

2. Stretch the cheesecloth over the mouth of a mason jar, and pour the pepper mixture into the cheesecloth. Leave the jar for two hours until the liquid strains out of the pepper pulp. Discard the pulp.

3. Add 2 tbsp. olive oil to the jar. Add one drop of liquid glue and one drop of liquid dish soap. Put the lid on the mason jar and, shake it.

4. Fill a spray bottle with one part pepper mixture and 10 parts water. Spray the leaves and stems of your garden plants with the mixture. Reapply the mixture after rainfall. The pepper will repel the rabbits, and the other ingredients will help the mixture adhere to the surface of your plants.

5. Dig a small trench around your garden that is 1 inch wide and 6 inches deep using a small garden spade.

6. Turn the chicken wire mesh on its side and lower it into the trench, so 6 inches are underground and 2 feet are above ground. Backfill the trench with soil to stabilize it. The mesh will keep rabbits out, and the buried portion will keep them from digging into the garden.

7. Drive sticks into the ground every 2 feet to reinforce the mesh if necessary. Tie the mesh to the sticks with twist ties.
