Birdbaths & Circulating Water

Birdbaths are healthier when the water constantly circulates.

If you want to attract a lot of birds into your backyard, one thing you can do is put in a birdbath so that the birds have a place to drink and bathe. However, as with any kind of standing water, the birdbath can become a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria and other harmful microorganisms. As an alternative to changing the water frequently, install a birdbath that can circulate water. Also, with a circulating pump, you do not have to worry about the water freezing during the winter. Does this Spark an idea?

Water Wiggler

Some circulating birdbaths create rippling water. This attracts birds to the birdbath while discouraging mosquitoes, which prefer to lay their eggs in still water. The water wiggler uses batteries, so you will have to replace the batteries from time to time if you're going to use the water wiggler feature continuously.

Water Sphere

The sphere birdbath does not spray water in the air, which can frighten away birds. Instead, a ball rests in the center of the bird bath and a pump drives water to a top hole on the sphere. The water then descends down the sphere. This fountain has all of the plumbing contained internally so that you do not need to add any extra plumbing.

Internal Pump

Some birdbaths simply pump the water in and out of the pedestal on which the birdbath rests. The manufacturers put the pump in the pedestal so that the pump does not take up more space and isn't damaged by weather. Open a panel on the inside of the bowl to access the pump.

Submersible Pump

If you already have a birdbath that does not circulate water, add a submersible pump that floats in the water and circulates the water throughout the birdbath. These pumps ensure that the oxygen completely circulates through the birdbath.

Solar-Powered Birdbath

A solar-powered birdbath is another option. The pump does not require a lot of energy; a small solar panel provides enough energy to power the pump. This negates the need for electrical cords and reduces frequent battery changes. Since traditional energy sources usually require some kind of burning of fossil fuels, which release emissions that harm the planet, solar birdbaths are more friendly to the environment.
