Repellents For Pigeons And Mosquitoes

Avoid feeding pigeons around your property to prevent them from returning.

Mosquitoes and pigeons are two animal species that can provide a variety of headaches, such as itchy red welts and potential disease transmission from the mosquitoes and messy cleanups from pigeon excrement. Keep pigeons and mosquitoes away from your property through assorted commercial and natural repellent methods. Control methods also work, such as removing any areas of standing water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding around your property. Does this Spark an idea?

Pigeon Description

Pigeons originally came out of Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa and have existed on earth for some 20 million years. The average pigeon is 13 inches from bill to tail and has light gray feathers with dark gray stripes on each wing, though numerous color varieties of pigeons exist, including those with reddish-brownish feathers. Adult pigeons have orange eyes, and most varieties have red legs and pinkish feet. They can fly at 40 to 50 miles per hour and often dwell in cities. The main predator of pigeons is the peregrine falcon. Pigeons often harbor lice and ticks.

Pigeon Repellents

Ideas for pigeon repellents include various commercial products, such as bird gel, bird spikes and bird netting. Use bird gel along ledges and other areas that pigeons frequent to create an inhospitable landing environment. The gel sticks to birds' feet but is nontoxic, and most versions can remain on ledges for up to a year. Apply bird spikes to ledges by using their clips to attach them, or use bird netting over entryways and balconies, both of which also create inhospitable landing environments for pigeons and other pest birds.

Mosquito Description

Mosquitoes are insects native to every continent except Antarctica. They average 0.6 inches in length and have long, delicate legs, transparent wings and long, thin bodies. Mosquitoes in the larvae and pupae stage live in standing water, while adult mosquitoes stay around vegetation that is near water sources. They feed on the blood of animals, including humans, in the evening and have numerous predators, including birds, dragonflies, spiders and bats. Fish will eat mosquito pupae and larvae. In addition to causing red, itching bite marks, mosquitoes can transmit diseases, including malaria, yellow fever and encephalitis.

Mosquito Repellents

Create your own mosquito repellent spray by mixing one part garlic juice with five parts water in a small spray bottle to apply on exposed body parts. Spray the mixture on strips of cloth and hang them around patio areas for extra protection. Set out citronella candles on patio tables and ledges to repel the blood-suckers, and plant marigolds around your yard, which give off a scent repulsive to flying insects. Throw sage or rosemary herbs on hot coals when barbecuing to keep mosquitoes away, or crush lemon-balm leaves in your hands and rub the oil on your skin to repel them.
