Homemade Spider Repellent With Vegetable Oil

Repel spiders with vegetable oil.

Homemade insect repellants are as effective as store-bought repellants but lack the harsh chemical ingredients. Spiders live inside and outside of your home and certain varieties bite humans and animals. Using a repellant keeps the spiders from biting your skin and the recipe uses traditional vegetable or cooking oil from your kitchen. Use the repellant on skin or to keep spiders out of your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Spider Repellant Recipe

Mix 2 oz. vegetable oil or cooking oil with 1/8 tsp. cedar oil, 1/8 tsp. rose geranium oil, 1/4 tsp. citronella oil and 1/4 tsp. eucalyptus oil in a small bowl. The rose geranium oil and other types of oils repel the spiders while also providing a light scent. Rub the mixture on any areas of your skin exposed to spiders and air. Your skin should slowly absorb the oil without leaving behind any greasy film. Do not use the mixture on your face and avoid swallowing the mixture or getting it in your eyes. Wash your hands after using the mixture.

Other Oils

Other oils repel insects, including spiders, mosquitoes, flies and ticks. Tea tree oil acts as a repellent and antiseptic. Use a small amount of oil on your skin to keep the biting insects away. If you find yourself bitten, rub a drop of the oil onto the bite to reduce inflammation. Citronella oil, pennyroyal oil, lemon eucalyptus oil, neem oil and patchouli oil also work effectively against spiders and other bugs.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil has a light and fresh scent that also keeps spiders and other biting insects away from your home. Mix 2 tsp. peppermint oil into 1 cup of water and pour into a spray bottle. Spray the mixture directly on spiders and the oil will kill the insects. Spray more mixture around doors, windows, cracks, holes and any other area that serves as an entry point for the spiders. The peppermint oil mixture works effectively at repelling insects from your home but is also safe for use on your skin.

Warning

When using the vegetable oil mixture, do not let the mixture come into direct contact with clothing. The vegetable oil creates a thick film on the fabric and may stain the garment. If you do spill oil on the clothing, immediately soak the garment in laundry detergent or pour a small amount of detergent on the stain and rub into the fabric. The oil may still cause discoloring on the item.
