Dead animal smell is one of the most repulsive and terrible smells that you can have in your home. When an animal dies, bacteria and fungus set into the carcass which will then attract bugs and other disease-carrying parasites. Getting rid of a decomposing animal smell is not just about aesthetic environment preferences, it is also a matter of the heath and safety of your family and home. If Decomposing Animal is in Reach
1. Locate the dead animal carcass if you have not already. The first step to eradicating the smell of the carcass is to get rid of it entirely. Make a note of where the carcass was so that you can revisit that spot when you are ready to continue cleaning.
2. Clean the spot where the carcass was vigorously with a powerful floor cleaner. Cover the entire area that the animal was including a radius of about a foot from where the animal was. This will cover any blood seepage or bodily fluids that the animal may have excreted.
3. Wash off the walls and ceiling of the room or area where the animal was. Depending on how long the animal was there, the odor may have settled into the walls or ceiling as well.
4. Scrub down the floor again, this time with an antibacterial fluid. This will eliminate any bacteria that still lingers in the area after you had cleaned.
5. Purchase an odor eliminator freshener at a local home maintenance store. These are air-freshener-like devices that are designed to eliminate any odor in a room. They come in sprays or plug-ins. Either way, follow the directions of the eliminator to extract any lingering smell that the animal may have left.
If Decomposing Animal is Not Within Reach
6. Follow your nose to the place where the scent is the strongest. This may require you to smell near air vents or in the entrance of your attic. When the smell is at its most pungent, that is where you should start.
7. Use a wire coat hanger or long stick to try and reach into ventilation shafts. If you can feel the dead critter, you may be able to extract it using the hanger or stick. If you cannot, you might consider hiring a professional exterminator to come and extract the carcass. Though exterminators usually specialize in eliminating pests, they also have the necessary tools to retrieve dead animals from hard-to-reach places. An exterminator might also be able to better pinpoint the location of the dead animal.
8. Use a long-reaching mop to clean area where the animal was with a pungent floor cleaner. If you cannot get all the way to the area where the animal was, clean as close as you can get. If possible, toss some disposable air fresheners into the area as well. These air fresheners will help eliminate the odor at the source.
9. Spray an odor-defeating air freshener into the area where the animal was if you cannot get to it with a disposable air freshener. This will not have as lasting of an effect, but it will still help eliminate the odor.
