Fresh Basil As A Mosquito Repellent

A mosquito biting a human.

Mosquitoes can ruin a summer outing, and commonly used chemical-based protection against them---according to some sources---carry their own risks. Studies have linked chemical insect repellents to health issues. Some scientists say that basil can do the job. Does this Spark an idea?

Scientific Studies

Mosquitoes are repelled by the fragrance of basil oil, according to a 2009 study.

Basil has a powerful fragrance that repels mosquitoes. A 2009 study reported in the American Journal of Applied Science concluded that basil oil is effective as a mosquito repellent, significantly reducing the number of mosquito bites among human test subjects.

Area Repellent

By growing several pots of basil on your patio or deck, you may discourage mosquitoes from swarming around the area. Crushing basil leaves releases the essential oils into the air.

Personal Repellent

A basil-based topical mosquito repellent might include fresh basil blended with olive oil and vodka. Rubbing a few freshly picked leaves on exposed skin also provides protection.

Types of Basil

While any type of basil may be used as a mosquito repellent, lemon basil, cinnamon basil and Peruvian basil have the strongest fragrances and seem to work best.
