Essential Oils Good For Wounds On Dogs

Treat dog wounds with essential oils.

If your dog has a wound, the first step to take is to clean the wound and inspect it for severity. Some wounds require medical attention; if this is the case, seek veterinary care. If your dog is lucky enough to have a small wound that can be cared for at home, use essential oils to soothe the area and speed up the healing process.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is an outstanding essential oil for various types of infections and wounds. This essential oil has anti bacterial, anti microbial, anti septic and anti viral properties. Applied directly to the wounds, it kills microbes and fights off infection. Its Cicatrisant property---an agent that aids in wound healing through the formation of scars---enables it to heal wounds quickly. Use tea tree oil topically. You can find it at health food stores or online.

Oil of Oregano

Oil of oregano is known for its antiseptic, antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties, which allow it to prevent the growth and spread of germs and harmful bacteria. It also kills viruses. Use oil of oregano topically. Mix oil of oregano with olive oil at a 1:4 ratio, and apply it to a small area of the dog's skin before treating the wound, as some dogs do experience mild skin irritation. Oil of oregano is available online from essential oil retailers or at health food stores.

Melrose

Melrose essential oil has antiseptic-like properties when used topically, and is excellent for cleansing cuts, scrapes and other wounds on dogs. Melrose also assists the regeneration of damaged tissue while fighting infection and fungus. Clean the wounds with water, then gently apply the Melrose essential oil to the wounds. This essential oil is available through essential oil vendors or at health food stores.
