Washington D.C. is located in the Atlantic coastal plain along with many other cities.
The Atlantic coastal plain is a vast and diverse geographical phenomenon that extends from New York State to Florida. Appraising living conditions within it must include a number of geographic, climatic and urban considerations.
Climate
The plain encounters a "monsoonal climate and subtropical conditions." This is largely consistent except for the truly tropical conditions found in parts of Florida. Winter temperaturess can range from freezing to 72 degrees, while summer averages settle in between 72 and 84 degrees. Areas located within the plain can see upwards of 55 inches of rain or precipitation each year.
Geography and Vegetation
Swampland is found within the Atlantic coastal plain, particularly in its southern reaches, where the land is poorly drained and rivers meander. There are also highly diverse plant species, in particular of trees. You might find pine in your yard or cypress or palm as you move further south. Agricultural land yields crops ranging from fruits and vegetables to tobacco and cotton.
Urbanization
As the expanse of the plain is so vast, you might expect that many of the nation's major cities are found there. In fact, some of the most populous and cultured cities can be included in the plain's realm. These include but are not limited to New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia and of course, the nation's capital, Washington D.C. Thus many of the plains inhabitants live an urban lifestyle.
