Make An Insect Repellent Lotion Bar

Solid lotion can come in bar form and even be scented to repel bugs.

A lotion bar is a solid, skin softening product that you can make in any scent, including those that repel bugs. Hand crafted lotion bars are not difficult to make and bug repellent versions are safe alternatives to commercial products, especially for kids. Made of natural ingredients, the bars will not only keep biting insects at bay, but soften the skin at the same time.

Instructions

1. Put the beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil in the glass measuring cup.

2. Fill the sauce pan half full of water and heat it on medium heat until it is near boiling. Set the glass measuring cup inside.

3. Using the wooden spoon, stir the beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil mix while it melts. When the mixture is completely liquid, remove the glass measuring cup from the water. Set it aside to cool for one minute.

4. Stir 15 drops of citronella, eucalyptus or tea tree essential oil into the cooled liquid mixture. Other oils such as clove and mint also repel certain insects, so choose the oil that repels the type of bugs that you want to keep away. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to scent the bar and aid the repellent oils' properties. Stir well.

5. Pour the blend into the bar molds. You can use empty deodorant push up tubes, but the liquid might seep through the bottom of the tube if it isn't completely sealed. Other shaped molds that you find at craft stores work well, such as those used for soaps or even for making candy.

6. Set the molds in a cool dry place to harden. As soon as the bars are solid, dump them out of the molds and use on the skin for repelling insects.
