Make Patio Curtains

If your patio has a roof, it is simple to make and install a rod curtain assembly to hold a set of machine-stitched net curtains to keep out bugs. As long as you have the sewing machine out, add some panache to the project with decorative corner drapery accents. The project involves a few simple building and sewing skills.

Instructions

1. Take your drapery and net measurements to the fabric store and have them cut yardage to measure. Take your measurements for the rod assembly to the lumber store and have them cut the pipes and find you the four corner connectors.

2. Build the rod assembly by inserting the rods into the connectors according to your patio measurements. Screw the sets of eye hooks into the patio roof at the edge of your patio. Space them accordingly to balance the rod assembly when you drop it into the hook openings.

3. Sew a pocket hem into the top of the corner fabric. Make it by measuring the diameter of the rod and turning a hem that width. Stitch it shut, leaving the ends open. Then turn in the raw edges and seam. Make the other three corner pieces the same way. Stitch simple narrow hems on the bottom of each piece.

4. Cut the netting so each section is three times the width of the measurement on each side of the patio. This allows for fullness in the netting gathers. Sew the side netting fabric by making rod pockets and bottom hems exactly the same way you did for the corner fabric.

5. Assemble your patio drapery by detaching one of the corner connectors and sliding on first the length of net and then the corner fabric. Reconnect and move to the next corner. Disconnect and add the other corner fabric on that side. Reconnect and repeat this process all the way around the drapery rod until you have four corner fabrics in place with net between. Redistribute corner sections and net gathers and make sure that the screw eye hooks are placed carefully among the gathers.
