Nobody likes pesky mosquitoes and unfortunately the little bugs won't be buzzing off anytime soon. Keeping them away from your pets requires a few extra steps in your four-legged friends' normal routine. Your pets will thank you for the extra attention.
Instructions
1. Keep your pets away from standing water because this is where mosquitoes thrive. If there are any ponds, ditches or low areas that hold water, be aware of where they are so you know when your dog or cat is getting close. Be sure to change outdoor water dishes every couple of days. Mosquitoes will lay eggs in dishes, too.
2. Prevent mosquito bites with repellents. Some flea and tick repellents will also work on mosquitoes. Be aware, however, that products with DEET are not recommended for cats and dogs. On the same note, products with essential oils are not proven for pets. There are also dietary supplements you can give your animal such as small amounts of fresh garlic, yeast and vitamin supplements.
3. Medicate your pets to protect them. Use a heart worm prevention product. Mosquitoes transmit heartworms, which can be fatal to dogs, and sometimes cats if left untreated. Heartworms cause cardiovascular trouble for animals.
4. Allow your pets inside. Avoid keeping them outside, especially in the early morning and early evening, when mosquitoes are most active. The less exposure your animals have to mosquitoes, the less likely they are to get bitten.
